How You Move
Exercise is typically not something a person at a stress level of five will often turn to for comfort. Yet, it’s one of the most important self-care tools to help us combat stress. Exercise reduces adrenaline and cortisol levels that are high when we are stressed and produces chemicals in our brain called endorphins that make us feel good. It’s even been used in studies as a treatment for people who suffer from mild depression! So, the next time your stress level is elevated, consider using exercise as a to help you gain control of the situation. It can be as simple as a five to ten-minute walk around the office.
Dr. James Levine recently coined the term “sitting is the new smoking”. Evidence is emerging saying that prolonged sitting increases the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. The only way to minimize the risk is to limit the time we spend seated every day. Taking a stretch break throughout your workday, getting up to walk the stairs, or standing to take a phone call, eat your lunch, or have a meeting with your co-workers makes a difference. For a 150lb individual, standing while working would burn 300 more calories a day then would sitting. Moving your body more does not have to be complicated, but it does have to be consistent!
